Beyond the CPAP

A diagnosis of sleep apnea can be distressing. Sleep apnea is when a person has breathing interruptions — called apneic events — during sleep. Not only does this result in daytime drowsiness, it also puts you at risk for heart attack, stroke, or other serious medical conditions.

Many people think that the CPAP machine is the only treatment available for sleep apnea. Although the CPAP is a life-saving device, it isn't the only option. Another treatment is a custom-made oral appliance worn at night that keeps the airway open.

How Sleep Apnea Is Diagnosed

A sleep test can be done either in a sleep laboratory under the care of a sleep physician, or in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Sheahan can administer a home sleep device that you wear several nights; the results are digitally sent to a sleep physician who makes the final diagnosis.
